On January 12, 1926, the two-person comedy series “Sam ‘n’ Henry” debuts on Chicago’s WGN radio station. After changing its name to “Amos ‘n’ Andy,” the show became one of the most popular radio programs in American history.
By 1951, when “Amos ‘n’ Andy” came to television, changing attitudes about race and concerns about racism had virtually wiped out the practice of blackface. With Alvin Childress and Spencer Williams taking over for Gosden and Carrell, the show was the first TV series to feature an all-Black cast and the only one of its kind for the next 20 years. However, this did not stop African American advocacy groups and eventually the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) from criticizing the radio and TV versions of “Amos ‘n’ Andy” for promoting racial stereotypes. These protests led to the TV show’s cancellation in 1953.
The final radio broadcast of “Amos ‘n’ Andy” aired on November 25, 1960.
On Wednesday, January 12, the Rotary Club of McKinney Sunrise is presenting their annual Partnership awards at E. J. Wills Gastropub, 1910 N. Stonebridge Dr., Ste 100, McKinney, TX 75071.
McKinney, Tx was probably the first small city in Texas or even the nation to initiate the ‘Flag Lease Fundraising Project’ back in 1993. The Rotary Club of McKinney Sunrise started with 300 flags placed in the community. Sunrise’s number of flags subscribed today in McKinney is approximately 3400 and grows each year. Together, from the other two Rotary Clubs in McKinney, the subscriptions of flag leases in McKinney are over 5000.
Sunrise Rotary’s gross income from the flag lease project exceeds $125k and returned to the community 100%. Our most recent enterprises are an All-Abilities Playground in McKinney, in which the Club donated $500k to the project, which cost $2.7 million. In addition, the Club recently initiated a scholarship fund with the Collin County Foundation to provide scholarships to students that the Covid-19 has displaced. The Club seeded the fund with $50k.
The purpose of the annual event is to acknowledge and award the Partners that help the Club distribute and retrieve the flags, prepare the flag sites, and maintain the quality of the flags. Without the Partners, the Club could not deliver and sustain the flag lease project. We are very grateful.
Together with our partners, we see solutions instead of problems. And, we are people of action.
We light-up on Wednesday, January 5th starting at 7:15 AM. with socializing.
