Both Steve and Bonnie grew up near Chicago and graduated from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. They both received PhD’s from the University of North Texas and both worked in education: Steve as Chair of the Economics and Finance Department at Texas A&M-Commerce, and Bonnie as a teacher and administrator with the Sherman Independent School District. They have three adult children and five grandchildren.
Their appetite for traveling beyond our country’s borders may stem from growing up where most folks had close ties to “the old country.” They and their children all have experience studying in another country; they hope their five grandchildren will continue the tradition. They hosted a high school exchange student from Spain for a year through Youth for Understanding. Rotary International also offers tremendous opportunities for educational exchanges. When the International Convention was in Dallas, they and other Sherman Rotarians hosted Rotarians from South Africa.
Steve is a member of the Grayson County Rotary Club and has been a Rotarian in Texas for more than 50 years. When they travel, Steve and Bonnie like to visit with local Rotarians. Thus far they have attended meetings in 12 countries on 4 continents. Last summer they went to four Rotary meetings in Scotland where each club offered the obligatory Royal Toast, lifting their water glasses and drinking “To the Queen.”
They have made four visits to Guatemala and have been to the country’s Western Highlands three times with Rotary International’s Guatemala Literacy Project on tours organized by the non-profit Cooperative for Education based in Cincinnati. Two years ago, Bonnie and Steve traveled to Guatemala with five of their children and grandchildren. The family toured the Guatemala headquarters of Cooperative for Education in San Lucas Sacatepéquez, just outside of Antigua, perhaps the loveliest of the world’s beautiful Spanish colonial cities.
