December is Disease Prevention & Treatment Month
During the month of December, we recognize all that Rotary International and Rotarians are doing to combat diseases through effective treatment and prevention. It was certainly no small task that RI decided to take on in 1985 when we pledged to eradicate polio. Only one infectious disease has ever been eradicated before: smallpox in 1979. That was due to diligent vaccination and surveillance efforts; the same efforts that have bought mankind ever so close to the elimination of another devastating disease. An amazing partnership between RI, the World Health Organization, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and regional governments is working to make this possible.
During Governor Max Duploant's visit to our club, Sunrise donated $500/$20 per club member to the eradicate polio fund.
Based on actual results, intelligence, and intuition from implementing the Flag Lease Program, 'The Ulitmate Non For Profit Fundraising Project' is a manual for non-profit professionals and volunteers who want to implement their fundraising project to promote their cause.
Built upon the success of the Flag Lease Project, this summing-up manual provides practical, comprehensive guidance for non-profit fundraising universally. With tips and tools, knowledgeable advice, and real-applied insights from the actual project implementation, this healthy resource addresses the entire spectrum of patriotic fundraising for non-profits.
Six months after the Congress of the Republic of Texas accepts U.S. annexation of the territory, Texas is admitted into the United States as the 28th state.
After gaining independence from Spain in the 1820s, Mexico welcomed foreign settlers to sparsely populated Texas. A large group of Americans led by Stephen F. Austin settled along the Brazos River. However, the Americans soon outnumbered the resident Mexicans, and by the 1830s, attempts by the Mexican government to regulate these semi-autonomous American communities led to rebellion. In March 1836, during armed conflict with the Mexican government, Texas declared its independence from Mexico.
The Texas volunteers initially suffered defeat against the forces of Mexican General Santa Anna—the Alamo fell, and Sam Houston's troops were forced into an eastward retreat. However, in late April, Houston's troops surprised a Mexican force at San Jacinto, and Santa Anna was captured, bringing an end to Mexico's efforts to subdue Texas.
The citizens of the independent Republic of Texas elected Sam Houston president and endorsed Texas's entrance into the Union. The likelihood of Texas joining the Union as a slave state delayed any formal action by the U.S. Congress for more than a decade. In 1844, Congress finally agreed to annex the territory of Texas. On December 29th, 1845, Texas entered the United States as a slave state, broadening the irrepressible differences in the United States over the issue of slavery and setting off the Mexican-American War.

After all, it’s not only the calendar year that changes, but many of us make goals for personal transformation as well. Ready to cheer on those around you?
There’s no group I’d rather “cheers” with while celebrating this new beginning.
