February is 'Peacebuilding & Conflict Prevention' Awareness Month.
We are People of Action..." Serve To Change Lives" is 2021-22 Rotary Theme.
Incoming Rotary International President Shekhar Mehta urged members to become more involved in service projects, saying that caring for and serving others is the best way to live because it changes other people's lives and our own.
Mehta participated in initiatives that brought artificial limbs to children, clean water and sanitation to homes, and better health care facilities to communities.
"Rotary kindled the spark within me to look beyond myself and embrace humanity," he said. "Service became a way of life for me, and I, like many others, adopted the guiding philosophy that 'Service is the rent I pay for the space I occupy on this earth, and I want to be a good tenant of this earth.'”

February’s theme for Rotary is “Peacebuilding & Conflict Resolution”.

What would your suggestion be for a club project that would address the February theme of ‘Peace & Conflict Resolution?’
For example > Gun Training, Peace Core support, delicate time to assist the Salvation Army to help the homeless, etc. Send your suggestions to either Bobbi or Bill.

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY
February 14, 207 A.D.
On February 14, around the year 270 A.D., Valentine, a holy priest in Rome in the days of Emperor Claudius II, is said to have been executed.

Under the rule of Claudius the Cruel, Rome was involved in many unpopular and bloody campaigns. The emperor had to maintain a strong army but was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. Claudius believed that Roman men were unwilling to join the army because of their strong attachment to their wives and families.

To get rid of the problem, Claudius banned all marriages and engagements in Rome. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret.

When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Valentine was arrested and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. The sentence was carried out on February 14, on or about the year 270.

Legend also has it that while in jail, St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer’s daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it “From Your Valentine.”

For his great service, Valentine was named a saint after his death.

Gradually, February 14 became a date for exchanging love messages, poems, and simple gifts such as flowers.

THE PROGRAM THIS WEEK

Director of Collin County Juvenile Probation Services - H. Lynn Hadnot

H. Lynn Hadnot currently serves Collin County as the Executive Director of Juvenile Services. Before being appointed as Director in 2015, Lynn wore many hats within the organization including Field Supervision Officer, Court Liaison, Training Officer responsible for state certification compliance and oversight, Detention Superintendent for the county’s 144 unit secure facility, and Deputy Director of Juvenile Services. Lynn is committed to both evidence and research-based services with proven outcomes and thinks beyond the traditional criminal justice system norms.  Prior to joining Collin County, Lynn began his career in juvenile probation services in 2002 after graduating from Angelo State University with a B.S. in Psychology in Tom Green County. He then furthered his career in serving youth and families by joining Youth Advocate Programs, Inc. in Tarrant County, serving as the Director of their historic program TCAP-South, which was featured on a PBS special for its work with inner-city gangs.  Lynn would later obtain his Master of Science in Justice Administration and Leadership from the University of Texas at Dallas.

In addition to his work in the juvenile probation field, Lynn has served at-risk youth and families in foster and residential settings with agencies such as Boys Haven of America in Beaumont, Texas, River Crest Hospital of San Angelo, Texas, and Morning Star Ministries, a foster-care placement agency in Salina, Kansas.  This experience provides valuable insight for policy and practice implications for youth being served across multiple systems. Lynn has previously served on the Texas Association of Specialty Courts Board of Directors and currently serves on the Criminal Justice Institute of Texas Advisory Board, and Criminal Justice Policy and Development Committee of the North Central Council of Governments.  Lynn was appointed to the Texas Juvenile Justice Advisory Council in 2017 and is currently designated as Vice-Chairman.

We light up on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, starting at 7:15 AM with socializing.
