January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month
Since 2010, January has been proclaimed as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month

Human trafficking affects both adults and children, men and women, and people from all parts of Texas, the United States, and worldwide.

There are four significant types of trafficking:

Adult Sex Trafficking - Trafficking of adults for sex by force, fraud, or coercion in strip clubs, brothels, massage parlors, street prostitution, or internet prostitution

Adult Labor Trafficking - Trafficking adults for labor by force, fraud, or coercion into industries, such as agriculture, food service, manufacturing, domestic servitude, or hospitality

Child Sex Trafficking - Trafficking children, under the age of 18, by any means into the commercial sex industry

Child Labor Trafficking - Trafficking children, under the age of 18, by force, fraud, or coercion into industries such as agriculture, food service, manufacturing, domestic servitude, or hospitality.

Take Action: On January 11th, participate in the Department of Homeland Securities WEAR BLUE DAY to bring attention to the issue of human trafficking.

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY
January 19, 1925

Taking Tennis to New Heights

The sport of tennis has seen several changes over the years, but one thing always remained consistent with this popular pastime: it is played on the ground. At least we thought it was. Then, in 1925, tennis gained serious momentum due to two brave stuntwomen: Ivan Unger and Gladys Roy.

They had a tennis match on top of a biplane traveling up to 60 miles per hour at an elevation of more than 3,281 feet. The photograph, taken during the match, was put on a postcard during the 1920s. What a truly incredible and daring feat!

This week the Australian Open Tennis started without the last year's champion, Novak Djokovic. But, he was not going to disappoint the fans as he had his march on the wings of an airplane.

The Australian Open is a tennis tournament held annually over the last fortnight of January at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia. The tournament is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events held each year, preceding the French OpenWimbledon, and the US Open. It features men's and women's singles; men's, women's, mixed doubles; junior's championships; and wheelchair, legends, and exhibition events. Before 1988, it was played on grass courts, but since then three types of hardcourt surfaces have been used: green-colored Rebound Ace up to 2007, blue Plexicushion from 2008 to 2019, and blue GreenSet since 2020.
